Ode to Bread

The most basic form of sustenance. It is the most versatile of foods. It goes well with any meal in any place at any time. It can be toasted, buttered, broken, and shared. It brings people together. It is bread.

Crunchy or doughy, dry or moist, bread is simply divine. It can be taken with cheese and oils and butters. It can incapsulate meats and spreads for a delectable sandwich. Bread baking is a universally recognizable smell that excites the senses. Wandering into a bakery can refresh and energize you. Taking a bite of freshly baked goodness, as it lets out the satisfying sound of a perfect crunch, is enough to make anyone happy. Eagerly anticipating that basket of bread at the start of a meal makes it abundantly clear how central it is.

Jesus did not carve meat at His last supper. Nor did He share fish. He broke bread. Bread is the base. Bread is quite literally the Life. Realizing pleasure in the most simple of foods can ground you. Can make you understand that keeping it simple is all you need.

  2. I just finished reading Pablo Neruda's Odes to Common Things and I was super excited when I saw your ode to bread. I wrote an Ode to Butter this year in my English class and my teacher loved it. :)
